Green certification that’s actually built for your business
Whether you are a local shop or a national brand, Green Standards Authority gives businesses a credible, transparent path to verified green status. Because claiming to be green without proof is not a small business problem. It is an every business problem.
We publish our criteria, our process, and our revocation policy. If we pull a certification, you’ll see why. That’s what real accountability looks like.
The green certification gap is real — and it affects every business
Consumers are demanding environmental accountability from every brand they support. But the reality is that most businesses, large and small, have no credible, independent certification to point to.
Some lack access because the enterprise certifications are too expensive or too slow. Others are large enough to afford them but simply have not bothered. And a growing number are actively exploiting the confusion, making sweeping green claims with nothing to back them up.
GSA exists for every business that wants to prove it, and to hold accountable every business that is faking it.
Existing certifications are costly and slow
B Corp certification alone can run $1,000 to $50,000+ annually depending on revenue, plus a 6 to 12 month preparation process. Many businesses either cannot afford it or simply have not prioritized it.
Self-reported green claims are not trusted
72% of consumers are skeptical of environmental claims made without third-party verification. Without a credible seal, real efforts get lumped in with the greenwashers.
Large companies exploit the gap just as much
Greenwashing is not a small business problem. Some of the most misleading environmental claims come from major national brands with the marketing budgets to make them stick unchallenged.
Consumers have nowhere to verify claims
There is no public, searchable registry where a consumer can look up whether any business’s green claims actually hold up. GSA changes that with a fully open directory, searchable by anyone.
Four steps from application to certified
We’ve built the process to be rigorous enough to mean something and straightforward enough that you don’t need a consultant to get through it.
Submit Your Application
Complete our online application covering your business practices across six core categories. Attach supporting documentation — utility bills, supplier certifications, policy documents, photos.
GSA Review
Our review team evaluates your submission against the published criteria for your certification tier. We may follow up with questions. The typical review window is 30 days.
Decision & Feedback
You receive a full written decision. If certified, you get your tier-specific seal, registry listing, and onboarding to GSA Impact. If not, you get clear guidance on what to address.
Annual Renewal
Certification requires annual renewal. You resubmit updated documentation so your listing stays current and consumers know your practices haven’t slipped. No renewal, no seal.
Choose the level that fits your business
Every tier is evaluated against the same six core categories. Higher tiers go deeper, with supply chain review, third-party documentation, and advanced standards at the Pro level. All business sizes are welcome at every tier.

Six categories. Openly published. No surprises.
Every application is reviewed against these six areas. We publish exactly what we’re looking for in each — because a certification you don’t understand isn’t worth having.
Energy Use & Efficiency
Renewable energy sourcing, utility documentation, efficiency upgrades, energy reduction commitments, and on-site generation where applicable.
Packaging & Materials
Sustainable, recycled, or biodegradable packaging; materials sourcing; single-use plastic reduction; and end-of-life packaging plans.
Supply Chain & Sourcing
Supplier sustainability practices, local sourcing, ethical sourcing documentation, and vendor accountability standards (deepened at Pro tier).
Waste & Recycling
Waste reduction programs, recycling and composting practices, landfill diversion rates, and hazardous materials handling policies.
Carbon & Emissions
Emissions reduction efforts, carbon footprint measurement, offset programs, transportation policies, and documented reduction goals.
Internal Policies & Culture
Formal sustainability policies, employee programs, community and environmental commitments, and leadership accountability structures.
The registry is public. The criteria are published. The revocations are posted.
The only thing that makes a certification worth anything is the credibility of the body issuing it. We’ve built GSA around the principle that real accountability is public by default.
-
Our full evaluation criteria are published on this site — so any business knows exactly what they’re being measured against before they apply.
-
The GSA Business Registry is fully searchable and open to the public. Any consumer can verify any business’s certification status at any time.
-
When we revoke a certification, we post it — with the reason. If a business stops meeting our standards, consumers deserve to know. This is non-negotiable.
-
All certifications require annual renewal with current documentation. A business certified in 2023 doesn’t automatically remain certified in 2025. Standards don’t have an expiration date.
